Choices That Change the Scene.

How do you know when a choice is working? And what do you do when it isn’t? Learn to evaluate your own work, uncover more playable possibilities, and respond to what actually happens in the scene.

A repeatable process for preparation, self-tapes, scene work and second takes—not simply doing something different.

The challenge

Know what’s working.
Know what to change.

An actor can make a strong first choice and still miss what that choice is actually doing. Is the tactic advancing the objective? Has the obstacle changed? Are you responding to your scene partner, or repeating a plan?

Your Next Take gives you a practical way to evaluate your own work, explore alternative behavior, make purposeful choices, and adjust as the scene evolves—whether you’re preparing an audition, reviewing a self-tape, or taking another pass at the material.

Different isn’t the point. Playable is.

Three connected disciplines. One workshop.

More ways in.
A clearer reason why.

Laban movement exploration, action-based scene work and structured improvisation form one practical process. Physical exploration opens possibilities, dramatic intention gives them purpose, and responsive improvisation puts those choices to the test.

Jason · Explore the behavior

Use Laban’s contrasts in weight, space and time to step outside habitual choices and discover new physical and behavioral possibilities—without prescribing an emotion.

Eric · Establish purpose

Connect the physical discoveries to circumstances, relationship, objective, obstacle and playable tactic—so the behavior serves what the character needs.

Improvisation · Respond in real time

Through structured improvisation, actors practice listening, responding authentically in the moment and readjusting their approach as the scene evolves. Eric leads this connection, with Jason contributing during integrated scene work.

The process

Four moves.
One repeatable process.

01

Explore possibilities

Use movement qualities to discover physical and behavioral alternatives.

02

Establish purpose

Clarify the circumstances, relationship, objective, obstacle and tactic.

03

Apply

Put the choice into the scene with clarity and commitment.

04

Adjust

Notice what your choice is accomplishing. Watch, listen and readjust when the obstacle or relationship shifts.

On your feet, not behind a desk

Learn it. Test it.
Take it into the room.

This is four hours of active work, not a lecture. In a limited group of 16–18, actors explore behavior, develop specific preparation, practice real-time responsiveness through structured improv, and apply those discoveries to scene work. They return to a shared dramatic challenge, then test the process on unfamiliar material.

Physical discovery

Experiment with Laban weight, time and space to reveal more than the first, familiar choice.

Purposeful scene work

Connect those choices to objectives and tactics; notice their effects on the relationship.

Structured improvisation

Listen, respond in real time and let the other actor’s behavior change what you do next.

New material

Apply the process to an unfamiliar scene or situation, so the learning transfers beyond the exercises.

The instructors

Two perspectives.
One shared goal.
